Fat Grafting/Fat Transfer Abroad 

Fat transfer is an operation to take fat from one part of the body (e.g. the abdomen or buttocks) and transfer it to another part of the body, usually the face, to try and reverse some of these changes. It can also be useful in correcting the facial contour abnormalities seen following traumatic scars and be used to cosmetically enhance the lips.
It can either be done on its own or in combination with other surgical procedures such as face and neck lift.

Patients who benefit from fat grafting are people who desire augmentation or filling of volume-deficient areas. The most commonly grafted areas include the face (including the lips), and depressions in the skin contour such as those that have developed following liposuction and scarring.
Each patient’s anatomy and proportions vary, and the decision to utilize fat injection techniques depends on the goals of the patient as well as the surgeon.

The initial consultation is very important. Your surgeon will need a complete medical history. This will include information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, previous operations and medication you are taking, if any.
Each patient is different, so your surgeon will discuss with you the best option after examining you.

Smokers have a high risk of developing complications, in particular wound healing and re-absorption and it is therefore advised that patients should refrain from smoking at least six weeks prior, and between two to four weeks following surgery.
Aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs should be avoided for at least the week before surgery and a week after surgery to help reduce the amount of bleeding and bruising.

The operation can be performed under local or general anaesthetic depending on the extent of the treatment, takes about 1 hour to perform and usually requires 1 night in hospital.
During the procedure, the donor area for harvesting fat is prepared in a similar fashion to performing liposuction. The fat is harvested using a special suction cannula so it is not damaged. It is then centrifuged to allow separation of the intact healthy fat cells from those that have damaged. The live fat cells are then injected in the treatment areas using a very fine cannula to place tiny amounts of fat in tunnels which are carefully built up to form layers which restore volume and shape. Between 50% and 60% of the transferred fat survives. This means a certain amount of overcorrection is required which also contributes to some of the swelling following surgery.
Fat transfer is often performed in conjunction with other surgical procedures such as a facelift (grafting of cheeks, lips or chin replenishing the skins collagen layer, smoothing lines and wrinkles).

As with any medical procedure there can be side effects. Most people experience some swelling and redness for the first 24-48 hours. Itching and mild discomfort is not uncommon.

Up to 50% overcorrection is performed with fat transfer to take into account the fat resorption rate. This adds to the normal expected bruising and swelling which may last several weeks. The final result can usually be judged at around 6-12 months following surgery. Due to the unpredictability of the results, the procedure may need to be repeated.

All surgery inevitably carries some uncertainty and risk, however they are small and infrequent.. Lipofilling is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed each year, and it can be done very safely.

• Swelling is the most common post-operative side effect. Most of the swelling settles down within several weeks
• Bruising in both the donor and recipient areas as a result of bleeding. It is unusual to require a transfusion
• Numbness of the skin overlying the donor and injected areas. This is usually temporary
• Slight asymmetry or contour irregularity. This usually improves as the swelling resolves
• Under or over correction of the defect
• Infection is extremely rare and if needed antibiotics will be given for 5 days.
• Loss of fat viability, with resultant failure of the desired augmentation.
• There is no risk from allergic reaction because the fat is harvested from your own body.

Fat injection or grafting has broad applications in cosmetic surgery: Correction of deep wrinkles and folds, correction of the treated irregularities and dents, volume augmentation of the treated areas such as cheekbone, cheek, chin.Fat injected into areas requiring volume-enhancement produces safe, long-lasting, and natural-appearing results as volume is replaced to tissues where fat is diminished. The procedure may need to be repeated several times to achieve the desired result.
Fat is one of most well-tolerated fillers available to aesthetic surgeons. It is an effective filler used for changing body contour, revising scars, filling depressions created by liposuction, and rejuvenating the face. After initial resorption of a percentage of the fat (between 20 and 50%) the correction can be considered permanent.
