Male breast reduction is an operation to reduce the size of the breasts by removing excess fat, glandular tissue and skin from the area.
There are a number of surgical procedures for gynaecomastia. All are performed under general anaesthesia. Depending on the complexity of the procedure required, the operation can take between 1-2 hours and require a 1-2 day hospital stay.

In cases where the excess breast tissue is soft and fatty in nature, and particularly when there is not a large amount of excess skin, then liposuction can be very effective. During this procedure, the excess fatty breast tissue is aspirated (sucked) away by a hollow tube placed under the skin through very small access cuts in the skin located at the periphery of the breast tissue. 

If the amount of excess breast tissue is too firm to be removed by liposuction, then a cut is made around the lower half of the nipple/areolar complex and the excess breast tissue excised, and the wound stitched with dissolving sutures.

If, in addition to breast tissue that is too firm for liposuction, there is a lot of excess skin, then a donut shaped area of skin around the nipple is excised to reduced the excess skin as well as excising the excess breast tissue. The wounds are closed with dissolving stitches.

The visual improvement in chest contour will be immediately apparent following a gynaecomastia correction. However, there is often some bruising and swelling which may last several weeks. The scars will undergo a natural maturation process involving a series of colour and texture changes over a period usually varying from 6 to 18 months. The final result can usually be judged at around 6 months to 1 year following surgery. Following surgery, you'll need to wear a chest garment for 6 weeks. Depending on your job you can usually return to work for light duties after 1-2 weeks. No sport, strenuous exercises or heavy lifting should be undertaken until 4 weeks following surgery.

• Excess Skin: Skin that is of poorer quality may not shrink well after Liposuction leaving excess or loose skin. Treatment for excess skin may necessitate an excisional procedure (i.e. such as a Tummy Tuck for excess abdominal skin). 
• Hematoma: A hematoma is a collection of blood under the skin. Hematomas may occur within the first few days after surgery or further out if the surgical site is traumatized. Small hematomas will resolve spontaneously and can be observed. Larger ones may require aspiration or drainage for optimal results. 
• Infection: Antibiotics will be given to you, prophylactically before surgery, and for several days after surgery to minimize the risk of infection.
• Blood Clots: Blood clots may form and travel to your lungs, resulting in severe injury or death. After the procedure you can decrease your risk of blood clots by walking 3 to 4 times daily. 
• Fat Clots: Similar to blood clots, but related to the Liposuction procedure itself. Fluid accumulation: Small areas of excess swelling or fluid under the skin. Skin discoloration Occasionally, areas that undergo Liposuction can have temporary or permanent overlying skin discoloration.
• Scarring: Your scars will actually appear somewhat worse over the first 3 to 6 months as the healing process occurs. You can expect your scars to thin and fade by the end of 12 months. However, your scars will never fade completely.
